Project development type Animal Husbandry
Name of Requesting Association Hands of Hope Zambi
Objective: To purchase goats for poor families and give training to improve quality of life of poor families.
Background: Beneficiaries will be grouped into three households, each with two she-goats and sharing a male goat for breeding purposes. The three beneficiary households will later pass on two she-goats to another set of households, all six households sharing the one male goat. The process will continue in the same way (hopefully producing some male goats along the way!).
The 100 project beneficiaries will be divided into four groups. Five literate members from each group will undergo 10 days TOT in basic goat management and conservation farming. They will then train their fellow beneficiaries. Training, supervision and monitoring and evaluation will be facilitated by the Veterinary Division of the Agriculture Dept in conjunction with Hands of Hope. Training will take place in the beneficiariesÂ’ community, located 30 kms from the city. Practical training will be given on shelter construction at one of the homesteads, so that each group can replicate this at their own farmstead. Each beneficiary has an average of five hectares, so that the total land can accommodate and feed 200 or more goats.
Most of the meat for the province is imported as very few farmers keep cattle and goats, so there is a good market locally and in the city markets. Conservation farming using goat manure to grow cash crops and using goat urine to treat vegetables will assist in having crop residue to feed the goats, at the same time providing an additional source of income from sale of the crops.
Copperbelt Province falls within the main rain belt and there is plenty of grass during the rainy season; goats will be fed supplementary food during the dry season and have access to clean water. The Veterinary Division will inspect and certify the goats as disease-free and suitable for the climate.
Use of Funds: The funds will be used to purchase 200 goats for beneficiaries plus training materials and instructors.
