Project development type Animal Husbandry
Name of Requesting Association Buddu Social Development Association (BUSODA)
Objective: To establish a piggery production centre and improve income and livelihood for 200 women and 400 orphans.
Background: The goal of BUSODA, which was established in 1998, is to provide institutional programme interventions in the fields of community health, sanitation, agriculture and non- formal education integrating them into community activities. 1% funded a successful project in 2005 to construct two classroom blocks for the education of 80 orphans and vulnerable children. The project will purchase 50 piglets and veterinary drugs; 20 women and orphans will each receive two piglets. After 12 months, once their pigs have produced a litter of piglets, they will hand back three piglets to the project for distribution to other beneficiaries. The major component of the project is construction of two houses for the pigs. This piggery unit will have a breeding stock of 10 piglets (8 female, 2 male) which after 12 months should produce further piglets for distribution to other women and orphans. Sufficient amounts of feed will be provided and the beneficiaries will be trained to acquire energy- and proten-rich feed supplements from local sources. Mature pigs will also be sold to nearby markets to earn and improve the income of the women and orphans. Initially 200 women and 400 orphans will be trained. The project will work closely with government programme on National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS), who will carry out the training on profitable pig production. The veterinary extension services will be provided by the Kingo, Kisekka and Lwengo sub-county veterinary departments.
Use of Funds: The funds will be used to purchase construction materials, labour costs for pigsties, purchase of 50 piglets, veterinary drugs and feeds, veterinary extension services and training.
