IV)           Project Title: To provide access to clean drinking water to poor inhabitants of Kokaka village in through the provision of  wells

    V) Aim: providing access to clean drinking water all year round to poor peasant farmers in Kokaka village by building a community well

VI) Methodology:

The execution of the needy project witnessed a participatory approach at all levels of the project implementation amongst which were the following:

• Community mobilization
• Formation of  well management committee (WMC)
• Identification of skilled labour
• Monthly holding of planning meetings, monitoring of project activities
• Participatory reporting

VII) Project execution/Accomplishment: The poor Inhabitants of Kokaka village is now proud of clean water through cleans

VIII) Community interaction /Participation:  The inhabitants of the Kokaka community have greatly appreciated and participated immensely during the wells construction project. They assisted in offloading the project materials from the vehicle/bikes and choosing the site. They were equally constituted into a well management committee to ensure cleaning, protection and disinfection of the wells

IX) Purchase of project inputs/materials: All materials used for the project with the exception of sand were gotten from Kumba being the most accessible town to the project location. Materials purchased with the funds included

• Disinfectants (eau d’javel)
• Gravel
• Binding wires
• Drawing rope and bucket
• Pulley
• Drawing ropes
• Buckets
• Protection nets
• Irod lids
• Storage containers
• Purlines

X) Impact of the Project: The project has greatly improved on the unavailability of clean water in Kokaka village. Problems of lack of clean water to carry out domestic and agricultural activities have been mitigated. In addition; the project has also enormously fostered the spirit of cooperation and understanding amongst the community and CENCUDER. Above all, the project has solved a challenging problem especially in a grass root community that suffers from severe water scarcity

XI) Lessons learned:

• The Water Management Committee committee has introduced a compulsory level of 500 FRS CFA to be paid by each house every year for the maintenance of the wells.
• Most of the community inhabitants are somehow ignorant about developmental issues. Consequently, there is need to carry out community sensitization campaigns as far as development issues are concerned.
• It takes local people time to adapt to development challenges since majority are illiterates. Therefore, the people really need constant support and encouragement from development organizations and or community based groups

XII) Difficulties Encountered:

 Despite the success of this project, the project suffered major setbacks like

-The people were stubborn in trying to use the well why construction work was still ongoing despite the numerous advise we gave them, assuring them that the wells were theirs and should allow the technician complete work so that the wells should be handed over to them. This aspect interrupted the technician on several occasions

-It was difficult to locate a good site where we could have access to water easily

-Difficulties in digging due to the rocky nature of the community and the nature of soil which is quite hard

-Frequent shooting and fighting between Government forces and pro-independent fighters due to the current Anglophones interrupted the project making monitoring very difficult even at this point

-Communications difficulties due to the absence of good telephone network and internet in the project area.

XIII) Financial Statement:

  The financial statement below represents the income and expenditure incurred in the course of the project execution.

Sources of revenue: 1% for development fund-Rome-Italy in USD: 5,000   in XAF: 2,800,000

CENCUDER contribution: 560,000 XAF                  

Explanation on notes:

-Note1. We incurred more cost in digging the well than budgeted due to the rocky nature of the community .This was compensated through cost we saved from storage containers note 2

-Note 3: The technician recommended wire nets in the place of barbed wire for children safety. Thus, we were able to save some cost from the used of the wire net which was compensated  the additional cost incurred  in transporting materials since most drivers were scared in going the area due to the insecurity of being killed by strayed bullets or kidnapped in demand for ransom note 4

-It was very difficult to organize training since majority of the villagers are still living in bushes so only very few turn up during the exercise that was very brief as a result of the armed conflict. So we were able to save some cost from this aspect note 5 and 6 that was used to meet up with the numerous trips made by the implementation team and the builder notes 7.

The bank also deducted 15,000XAF as charges note 8

    The encouragement we received from the women and children of Kokaka village has rekindled our efforts in search for donors who can support us in other community welfare projects especially provision of humanitarian assistance project in the areas which already torn by war
