Name of Requesting Association Ascociación Civil Artesanias de Calapaya
Objective: Reforestation, soil conservation and small scale vegetable plots on land belonging belonging to the Asociación Civil Artesanias de Calapuja, Lampa Province, Peru
Background: Calapuja lies between 3,900 and 4,300 metres above sea level in the Puno region of Peru. Local forests of queña and qolli have gradually been depleted over recent decades and the local community would like to replant the area to reduce erosion/landslides, guarantee a future supply of wood for fuel for cooking in stoves and ovens/heating, the production of utensils, household objects and carvings – which would also be a source of income for local women who run a small tourist hostel. Furthermore, the flowers of the qolli tree can used to dye alpaca wool produced by local craftswomen. 5000 saplings (polylepsis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polylepis) will be purchased from the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano de Puno/“Huerta Kamacani” and planted by local youths in the 50 hectare terrain belonging to the Association. Water for irrigation will be captured in seasonal streams and stored in small reservoir, also used for local vegetable plots Agronomist Jacinto Hurtado Amanqui, Centro de promoción integral para el dessarrollo rural; CEPIDER, will supervise the Project, including the lower lying vegetable plots (potatoes/ olluco/izaño, beans). The project was sent to the fund by a local priest, Juan Gnaldi, who has been a resident in this poor Andean area for almost 30 years. Juan presented an alpaca production project to the fund in 2008 and has provided regular feedback on that successful venture (see photos on 1% Fund web page). Prepared by Stephen Dowd
