CMR/12/049 - Pit latrine construction in village primary school

Objective: Construction of modern pit latrine in G.P.S. Eboko-Bajoh Village Primary School

Background: MUAFCIG is a local community self-help group that liaises directly between donors and themselves in community welfare projects. The local population of Eboko Bajoh is made up of peasant farmers. The primary school has been operating for more than five years with no good toilet facilities and the present pit latrine is in a poor condition and shared by all the school. There is no privacy, especially for girls and staff, and pupils and staff have to use any other nearby spaces available. Pupils have even fallen into the pit. The atmosphere around the pit latrine is unpleasant and unhealthy, and does not make for an environment conducive to effective learning for either pupils or teaching staff.

Use of Funds: The funds will be used to purchase materials and construct a modern pit latrine partitioned into four sections, two for females and two for males, with concrete and tiled floors and proper roofing. MUAFCIG will deal with excavation of the pit and unloading of any materials transported to the project site. The PTA levy will help in the maintenance of the infrastructure in terms of any repairs. The older children, with supervision from staff, will be responsible for keeping the toilets clean. A hygiene and sanitation sensitization campaign will be held in the school during which the children and staff will be educated on the importance of keeping their environment clean.
