NIR/12/088 - Establishment of small scale cassava processing mill

Country Nigeria
Total project budget ($USD) $7,120
Requested funding ($USD) $5,000
26/11/2012
Project development type Agriculture Production
Name of Requesting Association Rural Women Farmers Association
Objective: The target group are poor peasant farmers, food processors, food vendors, market women and foodstuff sellers. About 7000 rural families, approximately 25,000 people would benefit plus two neighbouring communities. The community has approved and provided land and a local contribution. The Anambra Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) will provide technical assistance.
Background: The provision of a small-scale processing centre will save time in the performance of onerous manual tasks, increase food production and supply within the community so that crops previously considered impossible or non-profitable can be grown, post-harvest losses in cassava production will be reduced, and farmers will advance to secondary levels of food processing whilst eliminating the need for middlemen. The community will construct the processing shed, which will be in a central location near the market so that market sellers can buy produce directly from the (mainly) women farmers. Equipment suppliers and ADP officers will train six women farmers as machine operators/attendants in daily weekly maintenance. Technicians from the supply companies will deal with repair and replacement of hardware, etc. The machines will be powered with different methods which are more effective and cheaper than electricity: grating and peeling engines will use diesel, fryers will use charcoal and firewood and the presser will be operated by hydraulic jack. Funds charged will pay the attendants’ wages and other maintenance costs.
Use of Funds: The 1% Fund assistance will be used to purchase a cassava grater, presser, fryer and peeler. The group will provide the processing shed, water tank, installation, transportation and honorarium of ADP officials.
Beneficiaries: 1400 farmers (cassava growers), 50 food processors, 6 women trainees plus families
