30/10/2012
Project development type Animal Husbandry
Name of Requesting Association Rural Christian Leper`s Welfare Association (RCLWA)
Objective: Income generation for people in early and second stage leprosy
Background: RCLWA runs a home for the children of lepers, providing home care and education. The parents are in a pathetic condition and struggle even to feed their family members. They have no source of income and no assistance other than from RCLWA. Those seriously affected by leprosy have some difficult in moving; others are less seriously affected and are in the earlier stages of the disease. Twenty people from the first group will be given poultry to raise; 30 people from the second group will be given goats. Each of the 20 beneficiaries will provide a chicken coop at their home and feed for the birds; the goats will be housed in a communal building. Training will be provided by veterinarians from private and government veterinary hospitals. When the goat and poultry “population” increases, this will provide food for the beneficiaries and the villagers. Lepers will take medicines regularly, which should help to prevent further spread of the disease. Schooling and higher education will be assured for the children from the income raised by the units.
Use of Funds: The funds will be used to purchase male and female goats (2F + 1 M per beneficiary), country poultry (five birds each), training on goat and poultry rearing, insurance for the animals, plus health education training and series of general health and medical camps. RCLWA will take care of training honoraria and veterinary expenses of the animals.
Beneficiaries: Fifty lepers and 40 children in the home run by RCLWA in Kadirvedu
